Justice redefined

by Eze Eluchie

Is there any reason on earth, why this character, Abubakar Talba, who parades as a judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, should not be charged as an accomplice to the death of the several pensioners, some of who died whilst queuing up, waiting for their due pensions from the Police Pension authorities?

(Justice?) Abubakar Talba has just delivered what will perhaps qualify as one of the most dense, unjust, infantile and nonsensical High Court judgement any judicial system in the world may ever have the misfortune of staining its record books.

A thief and director of the Police Pension Office, Mr. John Yusuf, who admitted guilt to stealing N32.8billion (or $203 Million) was sentenced by Abubakar Talba, to a mere 2 years in prison or an option of N750,000 ($4,500) and the forfeiture of some properties.

The thief promptly paid the fine and walked out of Court, a free man!

Apparently, neither the fact that some pensioners, owners of the monies John Yusuf stole, die on queues waiting to collect their pensions, nor the quantum of the fraud committed, had any effect on Abubakar Talba's reasoning.

This character, Abubakar Talba, before whom some Nigerian lawyers practicing in Abuja will bow before and exclaim 'My Lord' ought to have his head and conscience examined!

In all my over two decades in the Nigerian Bar, no piece of trash has so made me ashamed of the Legal Profession in Nigeria as the conduct of this character, who is supposed to know better.

The very least that can be done to redeem the image of the Nigerian Legal profession (if truly anyone is so interested) is for Abubakar Talba to be immediately dismissed and investigated for corrupt activities. And a re-sentencing of John Yusuf!

Truly the contraption is in a hopeless free-fall.

The urgency to renegotiate and restructure the Nigerian contraption is gaining currency.
